Getting Wakefielded

Dr. Andrew Wakefield was a British gastroenterologist who had his medical license stripped away because he coauthored a paper with twelve other doctors linking the MMR vaccine to autism. It was 1998 and the five page paper was published in the highly respected medical journal The Lancet announcing the discovery of a new bowel condition called Ileal-lymphoid-nodular hyperplasia. The thirteen doctors felt they had discovered a condition that might be unique to autism and recommended further study. Since then, this paper has been cited in 200 other scientific studies and is viewed as the pioneering study on the gut-brain connection in autism. Angie is pictured with Dr. Wakefield when he lectured at a symposium in October 2019.

The paper's other conclusion was more of a commentary than science but it created such controversy that it led ultimately to a witch hunt against Dr. Wakefield. The doctors noted that the parents of 8 of the 12 children studied said their child had regressed into autism after receiving their MMR vaccine. The doctors debated whether to include these parental comments but decided in favor of including the information to aid further research. Here is all they said, "In most cases, onset of symptoms was after measles, mumps, and rubella immunization. Further investigations are needed to examine this syndrome and its possible relation to this vaccine...We did not prove an association between measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine and the syndrome described."

That's all. It was that minor of a comment. How could a paper that dutifully reported the feedback of parents of eight children cause a scandal? But indeed it did. Dr. Wakefield was eventually smeared, slammed, and destroyed. False narratives circulate how he "faked the data" about vaccines and autism. But that is impossible because the doctors never reported any data in the first place! Dr. Wakefield has been called a "baby killer." At a press conference to discuss the paper, he stated his concerns about the combination MMR vaccine not being adequately safety tested compared to the single vaccines. He recommended the parents in England get the three separate single vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella rather than the combination MMR vaccine.

In 2004, facing extreme pressure and the threat of losing their careers, ten of the original coauthors of The Lancet paper, published a statement under the title, "Retraction of an Interpretation" where they said there was no causal link established between the MMR vaccine and autism. Of course, this is what the original paper stated but two coauthors, Dr. Wakefield and Dr. Walker-Smith, were unwilling to sign. They viewed it as coercion - a violation of principle and professional ethics. As a result, they were both put on "trial." It wasn't a court trial. It was a 'medical board' trial by the General Medical Council, the governing board in the UK for licensing medical doctors (similar to our AMA). They were both stripped of their medical license. Dr. Walker-Smith chose to take his case to a real English court and had all the charges against him reversed. He was fully restored to his medical practice and profession. The judge even reproved the General Medical Council for the way they handled the charges. Dr. Wakefield did not bother to fight it.

Vioxx was a pain reliever created by Merck and it caused 500,000 heart attacks. The drug industry is rampant with fraud. It is suspected that more people died from that drug (about 58,000), than the number of American soldiers who died during the Vietnam War. We have all heard about the Vietnam War but who knows about Vioxx deaths? Merck is the largest vaccine maker in the world. During the lawsuit about Vioxx injury in Australia, Merck documents were discovered that showed Merck had a "doctor hit list." Concerning any doctor who spoke poorly about Vioxx to their patients, "we may need to seek them out and destroy them where they live." Other documents were produced that showed Merck would "stop funding to institutions" and "interfere with academic appointments" if any academic institutions produced research questioning Vioxx's safety. And this was for a drug that Merck already knew (based on their own internal research) was causing heart attacks. This is how Big Pharma rolls. Cross them and they annihilate you. This is what happened to Dr. Andrew Wakefield. It's called getting Wakefielded. Kitchen cooking oils will not last forever. Depending upon the oil, it can go rancid in a matter of months or a few years. You don't want to cook with rancid oil because it smells like wet socks and the living components have lost their vitality. But the good news is, expired oil won't hurt you. There is no water in it, so no mold can grow to make it rotten and dangerous. It can still be used for creative applications. According to the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, “Vegetable oils have many good natural properties including good lubricity, good resistance to shear, a high flash point, and a high viscosity index.” These qualities make them quite versatile in a number of applications. You might consider keeping your old oil rather than throwing it out. Recycling expired oil could prove to be a valuable asset in emergency situations.

Disposable face masks, such as those health officials encouraged (or in some cases, mandated) the public to wear during the COVID-19 pandemic, are made of synthetic fibers and may contain chemical compounds. Many people have questioned the wisdom of wearing masks made of synthetic fibers for long periods, asking whether inhaling the chemical compounds masks release could lead to health problems.

Deaths from Alzheimer's more than doubled between 2000 and 2019. In 2023, nearly 7 million Americans have been diagnosed with the disease. Today, 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer's or dementia—the death toll exceeds the total of breast- and prostate cancer combined. Officially, it's the sixth-leading cause of death, but a 2014 study suggests that it is actually one of the top three (just behind heart disease and cancer). The discrepancy being how death certificates underreport the disese because they record the more immediate cause of death (pneumonia or heart attack) rather than listing the underlyings causes.

True confessions: I never liked flossing, so I rarely used the string. Angie used all of the flossing strings I collected from the dentist to cut the dough when making cinnamon rolls—I thought that was a better and tastier use! I always brushed my teeth (manually and with a battery operated toothbrush). My teeth felt clean enough, but still, I had a lot of dental guilt every 6 months when I had to admit I wasn't flossing. A few years ago, I found a device that removed all my guilt and shame! I discovered the waterpik. A waterpik (also known as a dental water jet) is a brand of water flosser or oral irrigator that sprays water to remove food from between your teeth. Water flossers are a fabulous option for people who have trouble with traditional flossing—the kind that involves threading string-like material between your teeth. The girl in the picture looks like me trying to floss!

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the activation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also called human herpesvirus 3. That's the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you have ever had chickenpox, you were exposed to the varicella-zoster virus, which stays in your body for the rest of your life. If this occurs, the virus can reactivate as shingles years later. Being exposed to children with chickenpox keeps adult immunity up and reduces the chance of shingles in the future. Unfortunately, because we have largely eliminated chickenpox in kids, there is no repeated exposure to the virus to keep shingles at bay. The medical community has traded a kid's disease with few side effects for an adult disease with a lot of pain and discomfort. The VZV is a member of the herpes family of viruses. When shingles develops, it affects the nerves throughout the body resulting in painful, uncomfortable symptoms.
