Larry A. Law

Cataracts are an eye condition that causes vision to blur due to the build-up of proteins on the lens of your eye. If it is not treated, cataracts can lead to progressive vision loss and even blindness. The most common treatment is surgery, but there are some risks. In 42% of cases, cataract surgery results in dry eyes and 20% of the time, it leaves patients with a droopy eyelid.

Artificial Sweeteners and Cancer

If you use artificial sweeteners, a warning was issued in July 2023. The World Health Organization (WHO) finally declared the popular artificial sweetener aspartame a likely carcinogen. Officially, the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) says aspartame will now be listed as "possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B)." However, the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) made up of the WHO and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) declined to lower the acceptable daily intake amount of aspartame from the current 40 mg/kg of body weight. That was not a surprise since the chemical sweetener has been widely used since 1980 in various food and beverage products like diet drinks, chewing gum, gelatin, ice cream, dairy products such as yogurt, breakfast cereal, toothpaste and medications like cough drops and chewable vitamins.

The Spleen—Largest Lymphatic Organ in the Body

The spleen is one of the least understood organs in the body. It is part of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is the garbage processing/recycling function in the body and the spleen is the largest organ belonging to that arena. The spleen resembles one of your kidneys. It is fist sized and it sits next to the stomach on the left side of your body. It is made up of two types of tissues: red pulp, which contains red blood cells; and white pulp, which contains white blood cells. The spleen sits like a reservoir in the circulatory system. It removes old blood cells and filters the blood to remove pathogens and encapsulated germs (bacteria that are double-protected and more resistant to the body's immunity). In addition, it regulates immune defense functions and produces antibodies.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus, or 'ringing in the ears,' can be an extremely debilitating disease for which no approved treatment or cure exists. People experiencing tinnitus often hear ringing, roaring, whooshing, hissing, humming, or buzzing in one or both ears. It can be soft or loud, low or high pitched, and it can come and go or be constantly present. It can result in sleep deprivation, loss of concentration, psychological distress, and depression. Scientists believe tinnitus results from inner ear damage that changes the signals carried by the nerves to the parts of the brain that process sound. In addition, some believe that abnormal interactions between the auditory cortex and neural circuits could be partly to blame.
